Short Term Water Storage Options
In 2005, Sanibel's then-Mayor Carla Johnston challenged the SFWMD to find 450,000 acre-feet of alternative storage for excess water coming out of Lake Okeechobee. More recently, SCCF has begun actively pressuring the District. To date, the District has provided water retention or storage totaling 126,350 acre-feet. More is needed and the District is pursuing alternative plans. The U.S. Sugar land is crucial to finding a true solution for water storage and treatment.
