Native Plants and Habitat on Sanibel

Sanibel Island has several distinctive habitats, each of which provides the right conditions for different plant communities. The illustrations below depict the different communities in general terms for our Landscaping for Wildlife program. Listed below are plants suitable for specific types of habitats. View some of our landscape installation using native plants on flickr.

Plant Real Florida

Native Plant Nursery Manager Jenny Evans is active with the Florida Association of Native Nurseries (FANN).  FANN has just launched a "Plant Real Florida" campaign, with a web site and a commercial which will run on most cable stations through early 2012.  To view the commercial through our YouTube videos:  click here.  To visit the Plant Real Florida web site, click here.

Native Plants Slideshow

In an effort to assist those interested in learning more about Sanibel's most common native plants, City of Sanibel Vegetation Committee Member LeAnn Beanland has compiled a slideshow of pictures and botanical information for more than 40 species of Sanibel's most common native trees and shrubs.   Click here to view the slides.
