SCCF Constant Temperature Mesocosm Facility
The constant temperature facility has six-1 m3 tanks arranged into two banks each with three tanks which are interconnected to be able to recirculate through a biofilter, a carbon filter and a Phos-zorb filter. Light is supplied by fluorescent light banks which have an optimal spectrum for plant photosynthesis (Phillips ADV850) and are controlled by timers on a 12 h on/ 12 h off cycle. Light levels of 500 µE/m2/s can be reduced using fewer bulbs and layers of 50% shade cloth (Green-Tek Shade-Rite). Temperature can be controlled to within 1oC for the range of 13-33ºC, with in line water chillers and 1000 watt water heaters with sensors and controllers, and by adjusting A/C settings. A Campbell CR10x datalogger records data on temperature, pH, DO, and conductivity, and can accept most other sensors.
